Spring Progress Being Made, Grappling With Winter Storm Damage

Spring is already rushing by, and we are into May. The last month, MVTC staff and volunteers have taken advantage of an early melt-out on low and middle elevation trails and have been out and about around the District doing good work. We have been clearing/repairing trails, logging out the roads up to trailheads and trying to get a handle on the extent of damage from the winter storms.

This past week, MVTC brought on our backcountry crew lead, and we are bringing aboard 3 additional full time crew members soon to add to the ranks. It will be great have the additional firepower to help address the heavy workload this season. In addition, this year the Forest Service will once again be able to bring on seasonal crews which is great news. Having a solid federal workforce on the District here is crucial and we look forward to working alongside our friends there.

MVTC would also like to recognize and thank the volunteers that have helped us so far this spring. It is a huge help and really does make a difference. We look forward to more upcoming volunteer events this season and connecting with folks who want to give back to local trails in the area.

So what have we been working on the last few weeks?

Cedar Creek Trail # 476: This trail has continued to be a focus for us. With the help of some great volunteers, we repaired 3 washouts within the first mile and logged out 1.5 miles up to Cedar Falls.

Driveway Butte Trail #481: An early season favorite, MCTC staff logged out the trailhead road and first 2 miles of trail up to the saddle. Consistent cutting was found and some damaged tread addressed.

Eagle/Oval Trailhead #410 and 410A: MCTC staff and volunteers cut out the road up to the trailhead and logged out the first 1.5 miles of trail. Heavy logout was noted.

Twisp River Trail #440: Thanks in large part to some hardy volunteers, this trail has been logged out from the Buttermilk trailhead up valley to the Poplar Flat campground.

MVTC has also continued to help the local Methow Chapter of the Evergreen Mountain Bike Alliance this spring when possible, mainly focused on logging out the Sun Mountain trail system.

As the spring progresses, MVTC is looking forward to opening up more trail miles and working alongside some great folks.
